Whingate Primary School

At Whingate we expose children to a range of historical sources. We aim to develop enquiring and questioning minds. History is like being a time-detective, hunting through the records, documents, photos and artefacts, looking for clues that might help build up a picture of what happened long ago.

We believe in bringing History to life through getting hands on with artefacts, role-play using visitors and visits to museums. Whingate is fortunate to be situated close Armley mills and the Kirkstall toy museum, which are both regularly visited by our classes. Whingate children  have also visited Thackray Medical museum, Royal Armouries and further afield Temple Newsam, The Dig at York and Edan Camp at Malton.

By understanding Primary and Secondary sources from these visits and experiences in school, they build up a picture of how people lived and what they thought was important years ago.
