Welcome to Year 1!

In Year 1 we learn and play together with Mrs Kellman, Mrs Knights and Mrs Gelder.

Our super teaching assistants are:

  • Miss Bate
  • Mrs Buxton
  • Miss Magda
  • Mrs Maxwell

We are always happy to help and you will find us on the door before or after school every day!

Spring term

This term our topic isMarvellous Mr Men’! We will be learning all about the Mr Men characters through listening to the classic tales and in DT we will get to make our very own Mr Men characters. We will design them, find ways to make them, then evaluate them.

In Literacy we will focus on writing instructions so we will learn all about the features of instructions and how to write our own. Maths lessons will be based around place value, addition and subtraction skills up to 20, counting beyond 100, and learning about 2D and 3D shapes.

In Science, we are continuing our learning on Biology and animals and will touch on seasonal change. We will mainly learn about the different animal groups and their features.

The second part of the term is entitled 'Dangerous Dinosaurs'! Here we will learn lots of facts about different dinosaurs.  In literacy we will be looking at non fiction texts and how to write a report.

In History, we will be learning about the fossil hunter Mary Anning and how her work contributed to our knowledge of dinosaurs.

Our Maths focus will mainly be measure - looking at length and height, weight and volume. We will also continue practising and refining our counting skills.

Computing will involve teaching the children some simple typing skills and we will use Purple Mash to help us with this.

We always have fun, whatever we are learning about, and we are sure that the children will enjoy sharing what they have learnt with you too!

Key information

Clothes

  • Please check that your child has the correct uniform, including pumps, in line with our uniform policy.
  • Please also ensure that all items of clothing, including pumps, PE kits and uniform are clearly labelled with your child's name.

Bookbags

Please ensure that your child has their book bag at school every Wednesday. This will enable us to access their reading books and records and issue a new book. We now only change book bags on Wednesdays, so please try to bring them on the correct day.

PE

The children will do outdoor PE on a Thursday afternoon weather permitting. Please ensure that your child wears their outdoor PE kit to school on this day. Indoor PE will not take place until further notice due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Homework

In Year 1 your child will be expected to complete reading, maths and spelling homework every week:

Reading - Reading books will be changed every Wednesday. Your child should receive 2 reading books each week. Please ensure that your child reads as often as possible at home and that you comment in their reading record. If you are working towards the 100 reading book challenge, you can also make comments on other books that your child has read that week.

Maths - This will be linked to what your child has been learning in class that week and should be at an appropriate level for your child to work with some independence, though they may need some support at times. We will send the homework books out on a Wednesday and homework is due back in the following Wednesday morning.

Spelling - This is a key area of the curriculum that many children find tricky and it is vital that they are practiced frequently and repetitively to ensure secure knowledge of their first 100 high frequency words by the end of Year 1. We will send the homework books out on a Wednesday and homework is due back the following Wednesday morning.
