As part of the local 'School Sports Partnership' we take part in lots of inter-school events, as well as working hard to improve our sporting skills within school.

Y5/6 Tag Rugby Tournament

Finley Holton-Brunskill, Millie Pickles, Madison Saunders and Joseph Jubb.
Some of our Year 5 and 6 children took part in the Leeds West Tag Rugby event, organised by the Leeds Rugby Foundation and the Leeds West cluster. The event was held at West Leeds Rugby Club and took place over an unusually dry and sunny afternoon. The team were in a pool of 6 teams and, despite never playing tag rugby as a team, they won 2 games, drew 1 game and lost 2 games. We made it to the 4th placed teams play off and ended up finishing 7th overall. As always, the Whingate team showed a wonderful team spirit and gamesmanship, as well as demonstrating some very impressive rugby skills.

Some of our Year 5 and 6 footballers took part in the another football tournament against schools in the cluster. The event was held after school at Castleton and involved teams from Castleton and St Bartholomew's. The team played 4 games in total and won all four games. The boys demonstrated fantastic skills, discipline and, as always, great teamwork and team spirit.

Year 5/6 Athletics Event @ Swallow Hill

Some of our Year 5 and 6 children took part in our first Athletics Event of this year at Swallow Hill. We faced excellent competition from Castleton, St Bartholomews, Holy Family and Christchurch. The children competed in track events including individual sprint and distance races, obstacle races, relays and hurdling. They also competed in a variety of field events including triple jump, vertical jump, chest push, speed bounce and javelin. There were some fantastic individual performances and a great team spirit, resulting in Whingate being the overall winners of the event. The whole event was great fun. Well done!
Y5/6 Girls Netball @ Swallow Hill

Our netball team took part in a friendly tournament at Swallow Hill. We played games against teams from Castleton, Holy Family and St. Bartholomews. The tournament was an excellent warm up event for the competitive tournament later on in the term. As always, the Whingate team demonstrated fantastic teamwork and great netball skills. Well done girls.
Y4 Boys Multi-skills Event @ Swallow Hill

Some of the boys from Year 4 took part in a multi-skills event at Swallow Hill. The event gave the boys a chance to play different sporting activities against boys from other schools in the cluster. The boys played 12 games of benchball, dodgeball and hockey against teams from St Bartholomews, Castleton, Five Lanes, Holy Family and Christchurch. The team won 7 games, drew in 4 and lost only 1. The teamwork displayed was excellent and we all had lots of fun. Well done boys!
Y4 Girls Multi-skills Event @ Swallow Hill

Some of the girls from Year 4 took part in a multi-skills event at Swallow Hill. The event was non-competitive and gave the girls a chance to play different sporting activities against girls from other schools in the cluster. The girls played 15 games of benchball, dodgeball and hockey against teams from St Bartholomews, Castleton, Five Lanes, Holy Family and Armley. The teamwork displayed was excellent and we all had lots of fun. Well done girls!
Girls Football Tournament @ Castleton

Our girls football team took part in their first tournament of the year. The event was held at Castleton Primary School and involved teams from Castleton and St Bartholomew's. Our exciting new team has girls from years 4,5 and 6 and this was the first time they had played together as a team The girls played 4 games in total; 1 loss, 2 draws and 1 win. We are very much looking forward to our next competition. Well done girls!

Some of our Year 5 and 6 footballers took part in the first football tournament of the year. The event was held after school at Holy Family and involved teams from Christchurch and St Bartholomew's. The team played 3 games in total, with two losses and one 6-0 win. This was the first time these boys had played together and they demonstrated impressive skills, teamwork and discipline. Well done boys!
Cycling Holiday Club
After the successful cycling sessions during the summer term, Phil Bateman returned to school to run a cycling holiday club for children from years 5 and 6. The children spent the day learning new skills and techniques, completed some difficult challenges, perfected their team and sprint cycling, and had lots of fun in the process. Take a look at the pictures and see if you can spot the future Bradley Wiggins or Laura Trott.
Mixed High-5 Netball Tournament

A group of children from our ever-growing netball squad took part in the first tournament of the season. This cluster event was a chance for the children to play in their first competitive games and was a warm up for future netball tournaments. We played 4 games in total: 1 win, 2 draws and 1 loss. As always, great teamwork was displayed and all the children had lots of fun. We are now perfecting our skills and looking forward to our next tournament!
Brownlee Triathlon Event
Children from Years 5 and 6 had the opportunity to take part in the first Brownlee Triathlon Event at John Charles Centre for Sport. Each child completed a swim around the indoor pool before quickly selecting a bike and completing a lap of the 400m outdoor track. After the cycling, they then found the energy to run 400m before crossing the finish line in style! At every point, the children were cheered on and encouraged by Jonathan and Alistair Brownlee. Each child received a medal and they even managed to get them signed by Jonathan Brownlee. A fantastic experience for everyone involved and a great start to the calendar of sporting events this year.
