Universal Free School meals for children in Reception and Key Stage 1 is a positive intervention in tackling the challenge of hunger, however, consider the fact that the traditional model of education front loads key learning during morning sessions when children are at their most productive and the impact of this is significantly reduced.
Therefore, we run two breakfast clubs each morning feeding up to a hundred pupils each day.
The Fuel for School initiative provides seven crates of intercepted food each week which would otherwise have been destined for landfill sites. This food is used to enhance the variety of food at our breakfast clubs, provide resources for curriculum work and then the remainder is traded on a Pay as You Feel market stall each Wednesday
Fuel for School has three key objectives:
- Remove hunger as a barrier to learning
- Reduce the quantity of perfectly edible food that goes to waste
- Educate communities to make responsible choices about food for a sustainable future
