The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles.

Increasing the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity in order to develop health and active lifestyle lies at the heart of Whingate’s vision for PE and sport. As a minimum expectation, every child at Whingate engages in 2 hours of PE as part of our curriculum offer.

In addition to this, we have developed an increasingly widening variety of physical activities to further increase activity levels.

Our lunchtime sports leaders work daily to deliver activities for children in KS1 and Foundation Stage. They also work alongside Leeds Rhinos coaches to deliver multi-skill activities for KS2 children each Thursday. Children also have the opportunity to participate in the Whingate Runners' training sessions on Thursday breaktimes; using the heart line markings to develop their running stamina.

Whingate offers a wide variety of after-school clubs from Y1 – Y6. These clubs further develop physical skills in sport-specific activities as well as develop teamwork and leadership skills. The use of coaches from the local community also provide valuable links to develop physical activity beyond the school day.

During the Spring term, Whingate will be participating in a pilot project with Fitter Future; an online resource designed to encourage children to complete 10-minute workout at home, in class and at other points throughout the school day. Opportunities to complete interval workout sessions will be available to all pupils in school through break time provision, in class provision and assembly time.

In January 2017, Whingate also secured funding for our Myers' Mile legacy project; an all-weather running track designed to utilise the school field for physical activity. This will be available for use all year round for our children and community. This running track will be used to increase the physical activity of all members of our school community through daily 10-minute physical activity sessions.
